Ridley's Believe It Or Not March 11 History Johnny Appleseed Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not—March 11, 2015 Trust your Hump Day is off to a great start. In the lead at the third checkpoint Tanana is Aliy Kirkle of Two Rivers, Alaska with an eight second lead and some very tired dogs.

Dee Dee Jonrowe a 61 year old lady who should be an inspiration to all of us couch potatoes here in the Continental U.S. has fallen back to 10th place. As always, I  hope you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids of interest and a relevant quote from E. McBean with a smile on your face, enjoying an oatmeal nut waffle covered in applesauce, blessed  with a positive attitude even though you know you will have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient.  You need only contact me for details.
       1. Johnny Appleseed Day—commemorating on this day in 1845 the death of John Chapman better known as Johnny Appleseed who introduced apple trees to large parts of the American; not that you need a reason, but a good day to munch on an apple.
       2. Day of Restoration of Independence of Lithuania—celebrating the restoration of independence lost by Lithuania as a result of Ribbentrop-Molotov treaty that freed Germany to commence World War II by invading Poland. Given Putin’s eyes on the Baltic Republics, not sure how long this small country and its two neighbors will be able to celebrate this holiday.
       3. 1978 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song on this day in 1978, as part of a 2 week run Love Is Thicker Than Water by Andy Gibb, the younger brother of the members of the Bee Gees whose short career was ended far too soon at 30 due to years of cocaine and alcohol abuse.
        4. National Oatmeal Nut Waffles Day—if you have a toaster, this sounds like the way to start your breakfast.
        5. Keeping Up With the Jones Day—commemorating the birthday on this day in 1958 of the child actress Anissa Jones who could not keep up with her drug habit and died of an overdose at age 18—tragic.
On this day in
     a. 1779 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was founded.
     b. 1916 the U.S. Navy launched its first super dreadnought, the USS Nevada.
     c. 1918 the first confirmed cases of the Spanish Flu were reported at Fort Riley, Kansas. The pandemic killed over 20 million people worldwide.
     d. 1942 under direct orders from Franklin Roosevelt, Douglas MacArthur was spirited out of Corregidor.
     e. 2011 an earthquake measuring 9.0 occurred off the coast of Sendai, Japan triggering a tsunami that killed thousands and caused significant damage to a nuclear power plant resulting in the release of massive amounts of radiation.
Reflections on vaccines and the Spanish Flu: "It was a common expression during the war that "more soldiers were killed by vaccine shots than by shots from enemy guns."—E. McBean, author of Vacinnes The Silent Killer, A Clear and Present Danger.
